She is the daughter of Beverly who was a housewife, and Thad an officer in the US Navy. There is a brother and three sisters. Her father was a trucker and the family was forced to move quite often. They lived in various countries as well as Germany, Japan, Greece and many other places around the world. In Maryland, Harden went to Surrattsville High School in Clinton. She went on to attend the University of Texas at Austin and graduated with a BA in theater in the year 1980. Harden enrolled at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts in 1988, where she earned her MFA.
